LISTENING TO JAZZ: MUSIC OF THE MESSENGERS
ONLINE WORKSHOP WITH PAUL SILBERGLEIT
The legendary Jazz Messengers, led by super dynamic drummer Art Blakey, were in the forefront of small-group straight-ahead jazz across the span of nearly four decades. During that time, they introduced some of the classic tunes of the modern jazz repertoire and featured a perpetually renewed cast of up-and-coming young players who would go on to be icons in their own right, such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Join us online for a guided tour, with MJI’s Paul Silbergleit, through the different eras of their music. This session will be dedicated to the memory of Jymie Merritt, the bassist for one of the band’s most significant lineups, who passed away this past Friday.
Cost: $15
Attendees need to purchase advance tickets. Attendees will receive a link and instructions an hour prior to the event to allow easy access to the workshop from a computer, tablet, or smartphone via Zoom Video Conferencing. Registration is open until the start of the workshop. Links will be sent promptly to those who sign up just prior to the start time.
Participants will be able to see and hear the instructor through live video. Attendees will not be seen on video but will have the option of asking questions during the session. Please call (414) 234-5565 or send an email to mji@milwaukeejazzinstitute.org if you have questions or need more info.
